About

In 2010, Cannell Library received a grant from the Associated Students of Clark College to fund the digitization of the most fragile portion of the Clark College Student Newspaper Collection: The Penguin Progress from 1959 through 1962. The purpose of this project was two-fold: to preserve Clark College history and to uncover the historical newspapers for the Clark community and the world at large.

During spring quarter 2011 Library Technical Services department completed the first phase of digitization of Clark College student newspapers. Archivist Robert Schimelpfenig used ContentDM database, ABBY Fine Reader and Solid Tools PDF to create a new online archive that currently contains 87 issues from the Penguin Progress and is fully keyword searchable.

Thanks to the archival groundwork facilitated with this grant, the Technical Services department will implement a gradual ongoing digitization of additional historical issues of Clark College student newspapers, including a recent donation of The Penguin Progress newspapers from late 1940s.

Clark College Libraries welcome donations or loans of Clark College newspapers for the purpose of digitization and online access to their content. Contribute to Clark College Student Newspaper Collection.
